Overhead and out-of-position welding puts the most stress on a helmet. The auto-darkening filter has to react instantly (you're staring at the puddle from an unnatural angle), the shell has to deflect sparks without warping, and the headgear has to stay locked while you're craning your neck.
We tested five helmets on overhead MIG (7018 stick equivalent), vertical-up TIG, and positional flux-core.

The short version: Largest viewing area we tested (13.1 sq. in.) with genuine peripheral vision. For overhead stick welding where you're managing puddle, travel, and rod angle simultaneously — that peripheral view is game-changing.
Not for: Budget buyers. Also the heaviest helmet tested — neck strain over a full shift.

- Headgear retention: A helmet that slips during overhead work is a safety hazard
- Reaction time: Under 1/20,000 sec minimum — slower filters cause arc flash on strike
- Shell curvature: Curved shells deflect spatter better than flat-front helmets
- Weight: Over 18 oz starts causing neck fatigue on overhead runs over 30 minutes
